Theunis studied guitar building through The Casimi School of Lutherie in Cape Town, South Africa, and The Galloup School of Guitar Building and Repair, in Michigan, USA, followed by an apprenticeship at Casimi Guitars. Before discovering woodwork, he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in civil engineering from Stellenbosch University. He builds his guitars from his home in Cape Town, South Africa.
